{ dance } Lost Vegas Performance

The Lost Vegas cast gathered for the big performance at the Durham Arts Council a couple of weeks ago.  All of the dancers were great and they really did put on a great show!

I love photographing dancers, but it really is a tricky job for several reasons.  First, they are usually moving at lightning fast speeds.  Second, some of the most interesting moves don’t always translate into a still image, so it takes a while to learn what to actually photograph.  And last but not least, there are usually some obstacles such as harsh lighting and other professionals that you must learn to work around.  During the taping I had to work around the videographer, which is something that I have done before (and regularly at weddings) however it’s tricky.  It’s like working on a movie set, the camera usually has the best angle and the still photographer has to work around the good stuff.  In turn it forced me to work to find some better angles, which is a lot easier said than done since choreography is usually designed to be seen from the audience perspective.  Luckily I was able to get some great shots and these two actually became my two favorites of the day!

Thanks Dilip! The theater has an odd layout at the Durham Arts Council and I was actually on the floor in the audience.

Nice images, Jameka! I’m glad that you overcame the challenges that you described and came up with these photographs! Thanks for sharing! Where were you shooting from – just offstage?
